Insider-Safe Computing System
This document specifies the architecture of the Insider-Safe Computing System (ISCS), a security architecture designed from first principles to neutralize insider threats within a high-assurance computing environment. The system employs a layered, kernel-mediated security model that combines mandatory access control, cryptographic session binding, strict role separation, network isolation, immutable security attributes, and AI-assisted audit analysis to ensure that no insider — regardless of privilege level — can compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of protected resources without detection and enforcement response.
The architecture operates on a foundational assumption that the threat originates from within the organization: users with legitimate credentials, physical or network access to systems, and detailed knowledge of the environment. The target adversary class explicitly includes privileged insiders such as system administrators, application administrators, backup operators, and developers. Controls are specifically designed to constrain these roles, not merely to defend against external actors.
A defining characteristic of the ISCS is that no single role holds unconstrained access. The system administrator cannot read application data. The application administrator cannot modify the operating system. The backup operator cannot access production file contents directly. The end user cannot modify their own security attributes. Every sensitive operation either requires the cooperation of multiple authorized parties (dual authorization) or is structurally impossible due to kernel-enforced boundaries.
Key mechanisms include:
-
Trust Tickets — cryptographically signed session tokens binding user identity, source IP address, device fingerprint, and a time token; access to any resource requires a current valid ticket
-
Kernel Mandatory Access Control (MAC) — file and program security attributes are enforced at the kernel layer, not at the application or user layer, and are immutable during normal operation
-
Fixed IP Binding and Network ACLs — devices are assigned permanent registered IP addresses; connections from unregistered addresses are rejected at both network and kernel layers
-
Executable Whitelisting — only kernel-approved, hash-verified, digitally signed executables may run on production systems
-
Maintenance Mode Gate — security attribute modification is only possible in a separate, time-limited, dual-authorized, fully audited maintenance mode
-
Append-Only Cryptographic Audit Logs — all system events are recorded in a tamper-evident, cryptographically chained log replicated to an out-of-band audit server
-
AI Anomaly Detection — a real-time behavioral analysis layer processes the audit stream to identify and escalate subtle insider activity patterns
This specification is intended for senior security architects and engineers responsible for the design, implementation, validation, and audit of the ISCS. It is not a marketing document. All descriptions are written with sufficient precision to guide implementation decisions. Ambiguity in the specification is itself a security risk and has been deliberately minimized.
